My job was to paste the photos on the map adding km marks and a short description. It was for the assessment of the damage and costs to repair the line. Needless to say it was decided to close the line.<br />Eric Bekker. My grandfather Eden Skinner was stationmaster at Ladismith. His daughter Sheila married Felix Middleton in Ladismith in 1935, and I was born in 1947. On a couple of occasions my father raced by car to Plathuis on a Saturday to stop Makadas to collect from it the cans of film for the "bioscope" matinee. We would rush back over gravel roads back to Ladismith so that the show could start at 2.15, because it would have been a late start if we had had to wait till the train arrived at Ladismith. When travelling in the winter from Cape Town to Ladismith and on reaching Touws River in the middle of the night, the stationmaster there allowed me to warm myself by the fire in his office and drink "moer koffie" before going to wait in the icy cold single carriage which would be coupled to the Makadas at dawn. So sorry that the floods meant that the line was not repaired, however if the engine had been at Ladismith then perhaps an effort would have been made to repair the line - or at least the engine could have been plinthed at Ladismith. My photos of the celebrations in 1925 are lodged at the museum in Ladismith.Liz Morgan (nee Middleton)noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4368258020854525544.post-72302809707774568362014-08-17T11:03:02.842+02:002014-08-17T11:03:02.842+02:00Please see my reply on the webpage which you have ...Please see my reply on the webpage which you have visitedAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4368258020854525544.post-79795199704087217892014-08-17T11:01:04.272+02:002014-08-17T11:01:04.272+02:00Also Matjiesfontein transport museum also has a Cl...Also Matjiesfontein transport museum also has a Class 7 and passenger coachesAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4368258020854525544.post-82236579153464566482014-08-17T10:58:10.834+02:002014-08-17T10:58:10.834+02:00Look around on my blog - possibilities:

When my father, Hermann Wolfgang Wehrmeyer, immigrated from Germany he worked for the SA Railways and he was a Stoker on the Makadas from Touwsrivier to Ladismith. He told me has story and how he enjoyed it. They sometimes simply stop the train along the route and go hunting for waterturtles.
